Labour Welcome Reduced Bus Fares For Stockport Residents

TransportLabour has welcomed new investment from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) which will see more than 12,000 free and discounted bus and tram fares for jobseekers, including for those seeking work in Stockport.

Executive Councillor for Economy and Regeneration Kate Butler said ‘I’m delighted that TfGM has come forward with such an ambitious plan to use this new £2.5 million of sustainable travel funding to make public transport more affordable for residents wanting to access employment and education opportunities.

‘Ensuring that Stockport has world class transport links is a vital part of the Labour vision to unlock the potential of our borough and this is a great first step towards doing that.

Labour’s 2016 manifesto contained an ambitious pledge to make bus services more accessible in Stockport and this announcement shows what can be achieved when Councils across Greater Manchester work together to deliver positive change for local people.’

Due to the comprehensive nature of the bid put forward to the national Sustainable Travel Transition Fund by Labour-controlled TfGM, Greater Manchester received £1 in every £8 which was allocated across the country.

Over the next 12 months TfGM will provide free and discounted bus and tram tickets to jobseekers, as well as free recycled bikes through a Bike Back to Work scheme.

Councillor Butler added ‘Labour is taking a lead on promoting sustainable transport choices across Greater Manchester.

‘Discounted public transport is vital in removing barriers to work and to learning, so this improved access will make an enormous difference in Stockport.

‘I’d like to encourage as many eligible residents in Stockport who could benefit from these schemes as possible to take up the opportunity they represent.’
