90th Birthday Wishes For The Queen

Labour Council Leader Councillor Alex Ganotis is wishing Her Majesty The Queen well ahead of a weekend of events across Stockport to celebrate her 90th birthday.

Councillor Ganotis said ‘On behalf of people across Stockport I want to send my best wishes to the Queen on the weekend which officially marks her 90th birthday.

‘It’s a truly remarkable achievement to have been on the throne for 64 years. The dedicated service she has given to this country throughout her entire life should be an inspiration to all of us in public life.

The Council has supported residents in organising a variety of events across the borough, encouraging our communities to come together to celebrate this historic moment.’

Queen Elizabeth II was actually born on April 21, 1926, to Prince Albert, Duke of York – later King George VI – and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.

Her Majesty’s official birthday takes place on Saturday 11th June, with events culminating with tomorrow’s Trooping the Colour celebration, which will see more than 1,400 officers on parade, 200 horses, and more than 400 musicians taking part.

Councillor Ganotis added ‘Street parties and a number of other events are taking place across the borough so there is a great appetite to mark this very special occasion.

‘I also hope the extension of pub opening hours on Friday and Saturday evening which has been arranged helps to foster the party atmosphere which the Queen deserves to make this a memorable celebration across Stockport.’

The tradition of the reigning monarch having a double celebration for their birthday started in 1748 courtesy of King George II.
