Candidate Profile: Dan Oliver for Offerton

With streets being made safer and cleaner, a focus on community engagement and cross-sector efforts to tackle loan sharks, we’re very proud of the work of Labour’s Offerton candidate Dan Oliver.

Over the past fourteen months Dan has been out in Offerton each week, knocking on doors across the ward and speaking to thousands of residents. He’s also helped to set up Neighbourhood Watch schemes in the area, had new street bins installed to tackle littering, and campaigned for the return of community skips in order to reduce fly tipping.

Dan has placed a heavy emphasis on people and community throughout his campaign, providing space on his leaflets to raise awareness of local voluntary groups, nominating worthy individuals and groups as Stockport Community Heroes and hosting public consultation events.

Having lived in the Offerton area with his family for more than two decades, Dan is a passionate and proactive champion for his community. He previously worked as an Intelligence Officer with the National Crime Agency and now works for a small charity in Stockport that helps people who are deaf or blind.

Speaking to us about why he’s standing to become Offerton’s next councillor, Dan said:

“I was an active community member in Offerton long before deciding to stand for election, campaigning against the closure of Offerton High School and helping to run a weekly youth group. I know that local politics can change the lives of my family and my neighbours for the better, and I’m incredibly proud that I decided to put my name forward for this opportunity.

“Many people have lost faith in politics, and I can see why. I was honoured though to be chosen by Offerton residents to be the Labour candidate for this election. I’m working hard to make a difference in the community and to be the representative people deserve.”

On his priorities for Offerton, Dan said:

“I want to make Offerton safer, cleaner and greener. Whether that be through the hosting of regular Councillor & police report-back meetings, continuing my work to tackle loan sharks or working to double the penalty fines for dog fouling and littering, I want to help more people feel proud to live in Offerton.

“More importantly though, I want to build a stronger community in our area. I’ve met some fantastic people locally who work hard to help their neighbours, as well as inspiring groups like the Offerton Community Kitchen and the Bosden Farm Community Group. I’ve done all I can to support them with their efforts, whether that involved volunteering at Farm Fest or being Santa at Offerton Community Centre, and I would love to have the opportunity to continue doing so.

“From speaking to local people I know that Offerton is desperate for change and I’m committed to being a proactive and visible Councillor in our community.”

When asked why he is standing for Labour, Dan said:

“For me, being a politician is about representing each and every one of your residents, whatever their background and regardless of who they vote for.

“Over the last two years I’ve been inspired by the work of the Stockport Labour Group, who have proven that communities can progress together and don’t have to battle with each other. There has been investment across our borough in leisure centres, parks and around road safety near schools. We’ve also seen the creation of the Viaduct Housing Partnership, a Labour policy that is already delivering affordable housing for Stockport residents.

“I’m proud of the vision set out in Labour’s manifesto for May’s elections in Stockport, and if elected I will work to support all of the 50 pledges that have been set out.”
