Concerns Over Stockport’s HS2 Link

Serious concerns have been raised over whether Stockport station is to receive any service at all from HS2 trains, following a recent Government announcement on the preferred route for Phase 2b.

The announcement appears not to mention previous proposals to link Stockport Railway Station into the HS2 network using compatible trains.
These ‘classic compatible’ trains were to run on the West Coast mainline from Manchester via Stockport and planned to stop in the town once an hour before linking into the HS2 line at Crewe. This would ensure Stockport retains three services per hour to London, and dramatically cut journey times to London on the HS2 service.

This was expected to lead to an economic boost to Stockport, providing world-class links to major economic centres including Birmingham, London and the continent.

Executive Member for regeneration Cllr Kate Butler said:
“It is highly disappointing to see Stockport forgotten in this latest round of proposals on HS2. I hope the omission is simply an error and not a change of plan.
“Competitive transport links with major economic centres are pivotal to plans for much needed economic regeneration, jobs and business growth in the area.
“Stockport is one of the busiest commuter stations to London which is not a major city stop and we are bemused that this has not been reflected by the Department for Transport in this announcement.
“It’s crucial that the Government listens to the many voices from business, elected representatives and the public who have called for the inclusion of Stockport in HS2 plans.

Labour Leader of Stockport Council Alex Ganotis further comments:
“This issue is of great importance for the future of all those who live, work and visit the Borough of Stockport, and Stockport Labour will be lobbying across all channels on this issue.
“We will do everything we can to ensure the voice of the people of Stockport will be heard, and that we do not miss out on the benefits of HS2. We are prepared will work with all parties towards a favourable outcome.”
