Janet Glover, Labour’s candidate in Offerton, writes:

“We never see our Lib Dem councillors around here”

“The Lib Dems do next to nothing for us”

“They expect praise when the council cuts the grass. That’s their job!”

These are just some of the comments made by neighbours around the Offerton estate at the weekend.

Disapppointing though the comments are, I’m also saddened to learn that the Lib Dems’ attitude is pretty much: “They don’t vote on the estate so why waste time there?”.

While this is all very worrying I have to say that I’m not particularly surprised.

People from the estate – and throughout Offerton – have told me time and again that they feel ignored and that casework simply hasn’t been done. The casework I’ve personally worked on bears this out too with people telling me their Lib Dem councillors have done nothing and hope that I can help.

This is nowhere near good enough. 

One Stockport Labour councillor told me she’d be ashamed to receive comments like that in her ward. I know what she means. People deserve so much more from their councillors.

But I’m not here just to find fault with others. I want to give you my pledges for the whole of Offerton:

1. I will tackle all casework promptly.
2. No issue will ever be too big or too small for me.
3. You will see me all year round and not just at election time.
4. I will hold the council to account and not accept poor services.
5. I will treat everyone with respect regardless of whether they vote or who they vote for.
6. I will put the work in and be a strong advocate for all our communities.

The Lib Dems have got one thing right though: I don’t live in the ward. In fact, not many councillors do live in the area they represent.

But what’s better, a hardworking councillor who’s on your side 24/7, day in and day out, or one who only cares where the votes come from?

Labour can win in Offerton. Labour will make a difference in Offerton and I’d be honoured to serve as your councillor. I am determined to be the change that Offerton needs.
