Executive Councillor for Communities and Housing Sheila Bailey said ‘I am absolutely delighted to announce that one of the first decisions that Stockport’s new Labour Council has taken is to invest in our parks which are so highly valued across local communities.
‘We have urgently allocated £615,000 towards the improvement of play areas in 10 parks and a further £93,000 towards surfacing works at Bruntwood and North Reddish to improve access routes which have quite severely deteriorated.’
A 2015 Council-commissioned Play Review identified a number of play spaces where substantial investment was required.
Councillor Bailey added ‘This decision is about using every opportunity that is available to us to provide safe, well maintained and accessible play spaces for children.
‘Our parks and greenspaces are invaluable, particularly in urban areas and Stockport’s Labour Council is committed to ensuring that the benefits of these areas are available to all residents across the borough.’
The parks benefitting from this boost are Alexandra, Torkington, Cale Green, Adswood, Bredbury, Thornfield, Hallam Gardens, Cote Green/Ludworth/Mill Brow, Green Lane, and Manchester Road.
The investment has been allocated from a one-off transitional fund of £1.022 million which was announced on 8th February 2016 to help mitigate some of the worst impact of cuts being imposed on Stockport by central Government.
