Labour Group elects new Leader and Deputy Leader

Councillor Alex Ganotis has been elected as the new Leader of Stockport Labour Group.

Following news of his election at a Labour Group meeting on 12th January, Cllr Ganotis said ‘I am delighted that my colleagues have chosen to put their faith in me, it will be a great privilege to serve Stockport as Labour Group Leader.

‘The upcoming local and general elections in May are hugely important. I will focus on the clear plan Labour have for Stockport as well as holding the Liberal Democrats to account for the complacent way in which they run Stockport. My most pressing concern is the £18 million of cuts they are planning for 2015-16.’

He added ‘I would like to give my thanks on behalf of the entire Labour Group to my predecessor Cllr Andy Verdeille who has left Stockport Labour in a strong position.’

Cllr Walter Brett, who has been elected as the Labour Group’s new Deputy Leader, said ‘I’ve seen first-hand over the last four years the ideas and energy which Alex will bring to his new role. He is incredibly dedicated, and that focus will serve him well in this crucial election year for Stockport.’

Welcoming Cllr Ganotis to the role, Stockport MP and former Leader of Stockport Labour Group Ann Coffey said ‘Alex is hard-working and totally committed to improving the lives of the people he serves. He will be a great leader.’

Cllr Ganotis’ election follows the retirement of Cllr Verdeille on 5th January.
