Councillor Kate Butler Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration said: ‘Any loss of jobs is extremely sad news and my heart goes out to the members of staff in Stockport and the 11,000 people nationwide who have been caused such huge uncertainty by the collapse of BHS.
‘BHS in Stockport Town Centre was actually one of the more profitable outlets the company had – the impact of the mismanagement which has taken place at the top of the business has been to destroy a successful, well-used local store.
‘I can assure all those affected that Stockport Council will continue to actively work with Jobcentre Plus to provide BHS staff with the support they need to find new jobs or other opportunities.’
BHS was founded in London in 1928 and Stockport is currently one of 163 stores across the UK. The company primarily sells clothing, homeware, electronics, furniture, entertainment and beauty products.
Cllr Butler added ‘I will explore innovative new ways in which the Council can help boost our high streets and do more to take account of trends in the 21st Century retail sector in Stockport.’
