The new £7million Brinnington Park Leisure Complex was opened on the 8th March by Cabinet Member, Cllr Sheila Bailey, local Councillors and representatives from Willmott Dixon, the Council and Life Leisure.
Brinnington Park Leisure Complex replaces the outdated Lapwing Centre, which closed in February, with a modern, purpose-built building – all thanks to investment from Stockport Council.
The new centre will provide the area with state of the art gym facilities, including a boxing gym, a four court sports hall, a 40-station fitness centre and an outdoor 3G football pitch. Offering a weekly programme of activities, general gym training and studio classes, the £7m project not only provides a significant step up in quality and variety of leisure activities – but also will save money through reduced maintenance costs.
Speaking after the opening event, Cllr Bailey said:
“These fantastic new facilities are aimed at everyone, people who regularly go to fitness centres and those who don’t. The Centre will provide opportunities for residents of all ages and all abilities to improve their health.
“ A wide range of leisure activities are now available at affordable prices which, hopefully, will help foster lifelong interests in sport and fitness and, who knows, perhaps discover sporting stars of the future.
“I’m proud to be a part of a Cabinet which has supported and overseen this project, which will provide a lasting legacy for Brinnington and the wider community”.
Councillor for Brinnington and Central Ward, Chris Murphy added:
“This is a great achievement for Brinnington and its residents. As Ward councillors myself, Andy Sorton and Maureen Rowles have steadfastly supported the regeneration of this area. I believe the quality of these new facilities, and the benefits they will bring to residents show we were right in our support.
“Our new colleague, Becky Crawford has also supported this development- we can both proudly say we have put our names to the project in a literal sense- having both signed our names onto a girder in the building.
“My only regret is that Maureen Rowles is no longer with us as to see results of her support for this area in the form of these fantastic new facilities.”
