New Cllr Becky Crawford: Brinnington Election a ‘Privilege’

After an overwhelming result, newly elected Labour Councillor Brinnington and Central wards speaks of her feeling of ‘huge privilege’ in being able to represent residents, and her sense of duty to a ward of significant Labour heritage.

Recent elections have seen success for Labour, with Andy Burnham becoming the first elected Mayor of the Greater Manchester city-region last month, and Labour greatly increasing its share of the national vote on June 8th.  However June 8th also saw a local by-election, in Stockport’s  Brinnington and Central Ward.

Whereas Labour may have enjoyed 40.2 percent of votes in the national election, and 63.4 percent of Greater Manchester mayoral votes – both impressive results – these are both roundly bettered by the Brinnington and Central by-election result.

After a hard fought by-election campaign, Cllr Rebecca Crawford received in excess of three quarters of all votes in Brinnington and Central ward– that’s 75% (3,877) of all votes cast (5,171).
