The Stockport Labour Group is sad to announce the passing of Councillor Maureen Rowles, early on the 4th April 2017.
One of our longest-serving members, Councillor Rowles represented Brinnington Ward from 1980 and 2004, the Brinnington and Central Ward between 2004 and 2008, and the Brinnington and Central Ward from 2010 until present. She also represented the Council as Mayor of the Borough during 2000/2001 and as Deputy Mayor during 1997/98.
As a mark of respect, the flag outside the Town Hall has been lowered to half-mast, and will remain so until after the funeral. Maureen was 85.
Commenting, Councillor Chris Murphy said:
“Maureen was one of my longest-held friends, a valued colleague and this represents a sad day for all of us.
“She represented the best values humanity has to offer, working steadfastly on behalf of those she represented and fighting for what she believed was right and just.
“My thoughts are with her family, who should know their loss is shared by a great many people whose lives have been improved by the energy and action shown by Councillor Rowles.
“Stockport has today lost a great servant to public life, who will be remembered fondly by all who made her acquaintance.”
