When Arriva Rail North took over operating Northern in 2017 it was to much fanfare about how investment in this new franchise would transform local travel.
However, proposed changes to the current timetable tell a very different story.
If these changes go ahead, we’ll see a REDUCTION in the number of trains stopping at: Davenport, Woodsmoor and Heaton Chapel stations where trains are already overcrowded at peak times.
We think Northern should go back to the drawing board and find a way to IMPROVE these services not cut them.
And it’s not just commuters travelling to and from work who would be affected; it’s young people going to college, people visiting Stepping Hill Hospital and anyone using the service throughout the day.
If you agree with us that Northern should be IMPROVING NOT CUTTING our train services, then add your name to our petition and we’ll make sure your voice is heard.

My husband and I use the trains at davenport, to go to Manchester and Hazel grove, it’s local to us and save using the car, the trains are crowded most times or not enough carriages on. They need to sort this out then people may use public transport instead of their cars. Also trains and buses need cleaning, they are smelly and dirty.
We need more trains to serve the community and to keep cars off the roads
Our roads are already overcrowded. Davenport and Woodsmoor are quite prosperous areas where most commuters have a car – which they will be more inclined to use if commuting by train becomes more difficult.
A friend living in Davenport has said that the latest Labour Link stated that proposals to reduce rush hour services to Davenport and Woodsmoor had been withdrawn. Do you still want people to sign the petition?
Hello Rita,
Thanks for your comment as this highlights an important issue. Stockport Labour very much encourage you to sign the petition; as the new proposals on the table are very much still inadequate for the needs of residents.
The Labour Links which your friend may have seen was published after Northern Rail had indeed withdrawn their initial timetable proposals, claiming the train times were generated by a ‘system error’.
Despite this, the subsequent updated proposals (published after the leaflet) were again highly inadequate, and while showing more services at peak times than the first set of plans, still offered reduced services overall at these times and irregular peak services as standing proposals.
Although the print distributions could not be reversed by this point, this was immediately clarified and updated on this website and social media.
We want to emphasise the campaign is very much live and needs all the support we can muster to protect the interests of residents.
Thanks again,
Stockport Labour Team
