PROCESS TO FIT SPRINKLERS ACROSS ALL STOCKPORT TOWER BLOCKS BEGINS THIS MONTH

Stockport Labour’s lead Member for Housing, Cllr Sheila Bailey, has announced that residents in all Stockport’s residential tower blocks will , this July, start to be consulted on the fitting of sprinkler systems in their flats.

The full retrofitting of all 22 Council-owned tower blocks “will help make Stockport’s tower blocks as safe as they can be” said Cllr Bailey during the 4th July full Council meeting.

Work on the Borough’s 22 high-rise flats should be completed within two years.

The plan for full retrofitting was first announced in June 2017 in response to the horrific and tragic Grenfell Tower fire that left 72 people dead, 70 people injured and everyone who survived homeless.  It must never be repeated.

Councillor Bailey said:

“The full retrofitting of sprinklers across all our residential tower blocks, plus the extensive fire safety checks carried out by Stockport Homes and the Fire Service, show that Stockport has done and is doing everything possible to provide the safest possible accommodation for all our tower block residents.  Nothing less will do”.

“These actions have the full and complete backing of the fire service, who have been calling for sprinklers to be retro fitted in existing tower blocks and in all new blocks for many years.  They know they save the lives of residents and firefighters”.
