STATEMENT OF THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED STOCKPORT LABOUR AHEAD OF MAY 2nd

Stockport Labour wish to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all our candidates, activists and supporters for their hard-fought efforts during the 2019 Local Elections campaign.

As a result you have help us to increase our numbers against trend, reaching our highest level of representation on this Council for 20 years, and the second highest number of Labour Councillors to sit on this council since its creation on 1974. Further still, for the first time in its history, Stockport Labour’s representation in the Council is gender balanced, and has now elected a woman Leader, Cllr Elise Wilson, the first in 27 years.

This has all happened against a backdrop of being in minority administration across a period in which Stockport Council has seen its greatest ever financial challenges.

All this success would not be possible without the contributions made by all our candidates, Councillors, MP’s and other political representatives who assisted in our campaign. And, most importantly, all our valued grassroots members and activists.

We want to extend particular thanks to our candidates who were unsuccessful in terms of being elected. You were not unsuccessful in other ways.  You have all proven yourselves energetic and creative campaigners who have ensured a loud Labour voice is present in areas where it would not be otherwise.  You have persuaded many to vote Labour across your respective areas against a national backdrop beyond our control.

We are confident your talents will be reflected in Council representation and look forward to working with you all to the benefit of the people of Stockport in future.

Stockport Labour look forward to continuing to press ahead with economic growth which works for everyone in Stockport, and ensuring this council remains focussed upon reforming to protect services, protecting the vulnerable and fostering stronger communities across Stockport.
