Cllr David Meller, Stockport Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration said:
“The primary focus of activities right now must be to ensure everyone is safe and on getting things back to normal as soon as possible. We must do this while keeping an eye on the weather over the next few days.
“A big thank you must go out to the work of both the emergency services and our council officers who have worked so hard during an incredibly intense time to ensure public safety and to bring the situation under control.
“The level of rainfall we have seen has been truly exceptional. Nevertheless, we need to fully understand how this situation has developed, in order to take the actions needed to mitigate any potential future flooding events.
“We will be working with our officers to ensure a robust investigation and response takes place as soon as the immediate situation is resolved.
“With a changing climate, we must be prepared for more extreme weather events, while looking at ways to change our behaviour as a whole: from improving and using public transport through to our approach to providing infrastructure.
“This last week or so should be a huge wake-up call for everyone on both fronts.”
