Stockport Children’s book awards 2018- Shortlist is announced

Stockport Libraries are pleased to announce the shortlisted titles for the 2018 Stockport Children’s Book Awards.

 

Now in its 23rd year, the awards celebrate excellence and originality in children’s writing and aims to raise the profile of reading for pleasure amongst children and families in Stockport.

From May to July children from across the borough are being asked to read the shortlisted books and vote for their favourite. The winners are set to be announced at a special presentation evening in October. This annual event is well attended by teachers, children and families who get the chance to meet the winning authors in person.

 

The shortlisted titles are:

 

Best Picture Book (Key stage 1)
The Squirrels Who Squabbled by Rachel Bright
The everywhere Bear by Julia Donaldson
Pirate Stew by Lou Carter
Grandad’s Secret Giant by David Litchfield
Can I Join Your Club? By John Kelly

 

Best Read for Juniors (Key stage 2)
Letters From The Lighthouse by Emma Carroll
The Extraordinary Colours of Auden Dare by Zillah Bethell
Running on the Rood of the World by Jess Butterworth
The Goldfish Boy by Lisa Thompson
The Creakers by Tom Fletcher

 

Best Teen Read (Key stage 3)
Girls Can’t Hit by T.S Easton
Stargazing for Beginners by Jenny McLachlan
The One Memory of Flora Banks by Emily Barr
Kick by Mitch Johnson
The Nearest Faraway Place by Hayley Long

 

Cllr David Sedgwick, Cabinet Member for Reform and Governance said:

 

“Reading is such an important part of a child’s development. Books help educate, inspire and open new worlds and I would encourage parents to take their children to the local library or nearest schools to vote for their favourite book.”

 

The awards are highly regarded by the publishing industry as the winners are selected exclusively by children.
