STOCKPORT LABOUR has launched its ambitious manifesto for the local government elections to be held on thursday 2nd May, 2019.
Labour’s manifesto, “VISION 2020” outlines a positive vision for a progressive and outward-looking council, which prioritises protecting services, growing stronger communities and building upon the success of the last three years of the Labour administration in Stockport.
At the manifesto launch in Cheadle Hulme North ward, Stockport Labour Leader, Cllr Alexander Ganotis, said:
“This document sets out our vision up to 2020, a vision of an administration that puts strengthening communities and listening to people at the heart of its approach.
“We are setting out 20 clear pledges for 2020, a suite of plans which can help Stockport both tackle the challenges people face today, and equip this Borough for the decade ahead. This will help us ensure this Council delivers for residents; protecting services and the environment, while promoting economic growth and the housing we need.
“However, this document goes further, with a detailed report back on 20 areas of key accomplishments we said we would work towards, and are already delivering for the people of Stockport.
“We have come a long way in the three years since Labour first came to power in Stockport, and this manifesto sets out our clear record of delivery.
“The evidence is clear, Stockport Labour is the only party which has the energy, ideas and vision to place Stockport where it needs to be for the future.”
Priorities within Stockport Labour’s manifesto include:
-
- Renewing Stockport with a gear shift in regeneration by 2020, including work beginning on Merseyway renovation, on the new urban park and Transport Interchange, and progress upon first ever GM Mayoral Development Corporation for the Town Centre West. Alongside this, we will develop a ‘District Centre Roadmap’ to ensure no area of Stockport is left behind.
- Tackling the housing crisis by building 300 more affordable homes on top of the 1,000 we have already built or are currently building through the council’s development partnership, Viaduct Housing- and development of plans for up to 3,000 more homes in the Town Centre West.
- Supporting integrated transport through delivering a new £42million state-of-the-art Transport Interchange, pressing TfGM to ensure Metrolink plans extend across the Borough and working with the Metropolitan Mayor to deliver free ‘opportunity pass’ travel for 16-18 year olds.
- Supporting services through reforming the way services are delivered, to protect the front line as far as possible and not simply cutting our way to a balanced budget. We will continue our prudential approach to ensuring Council finances are fit to invest in both Stockport and in Council services for the future.
- Greening Stockport with the largest ever tree-planting programme the Borough has seen, with over 2000 new trees planned, alongside plans to extend cycle networks and improve recycling rates.
Our record shows just how seriously the Labour Group take the job of building stronger communities and renewing Stockport for the future. This manifesto vision for 2020 shows only Labour have a transformational vision for the future of Stockport, which only we can deliver with your support.
