STOCKPORT LABOUR: LEADING STOCKPORT IN 2019/20

Following the results of the 2nd May Local Elections results, Stockport Labour are to continue their leadership of Stockport Council for the 2019/20 municipal year.

Labour will now go form a new Council Cabinet, and work to bring about their manifesto priorities. These include; delivering the homes people need, greening Stockport, reforming to protect services and expanding efforts to regenerate Stockport’s local economies.

The retention of the Council Leadership has been achieved by Labour working with other groups for the benefit of Stockport- principles which have guided Labour’s successful three years governing Stockport from 2016.

This comes on top of Stockport Labour achieving the highest level of Council representation for two decades, with 26 Councillors – the second highest tally for Labour since the Borough’s creation.

Stockport Labour have achieved gender balanced representation for the first time ever, with 13 women Councillors. And, for the first time in two decades, Labour have appointed a woman leader with Cllr Elise Wilson confirmed to replace outgoing Leader Cllr Alex Ganotis last week.

Cllr Wilson should be formally appointed Council Leader at the annual Council meeting on 21st May.

Commenting, Cllr Wilson said:

“I’m pleased agreements have been reached to allow for the continuation of a Labour Cabinet leading Stockport Council. This has been achieved because we have worked work openly and constructively with others to come to agreement.

“Working like this has been key to our successful running of the Council as a minority administration over the last three years.  I believe this has also been key delivering the positive changes we see all around us for the people of Stockport.  People are recognising this, and as a result we have increased our number of Labour Councillors each year from 2016, when we took control.

“We look forward to continuing our record of delivery on housing, strengthening communities, greening Stockport, and delivering economic growth and regeneration which works for all the people of Stockport.

“We will do so with Labour principles at heart, protecting services as far as possible and working towards a better Stockport which works for everyone.”
