STOCKPORT LABOUR: BUILDING AFFORDABLE HOMES FASTER THAN AT ANY POINT THIS CENTURY

Labour-led Stockport Council is now building more affordable housing than at any point this century. Stockport’s Council-owned housing partnership, Viaduct is set for 1000 homes to be either fully built or being built inside just 3 years of launch, around half of which meet the government definition of ‘affordable’.

As the first ever council-owned housing development partnership in Stockport, Viaduct Housing has already completed over 500 homes in the last two years, 320 of which were completed last year alone, and around half of which are affordable. This makes last year’s affordable housing build completion rate (160) Stockport highest for any one year period as far as comparable government records go back, to 1992.[1] This is also the highest tally for any two year period since 1992 (234 for 2016-18).

In addition, a further 192 housing units in total are expected to progress through planning this year. These will bring the number of houses built or in the pipeline from Feb 2017, when Viaduct was launched, to over seven hundred. With yet more planned,  Viaduct is expected to exceed over 1,000 homes  of all types built or being built inside 3 years of Viaduct’s Launch under Labour in 2017, around half of which will be affordable.

On top of all this, the Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) plans for Stockport’s town centre west, recently approved by the GMCA are set to deliver thousands more homes, many of which will be affordable. The first ever in MDC in Greater Manchester, this will seek to deliver around 3,000 homes over the next five to ten years.

Cllr Sheila Bailey commented:

“Stockport Labour is delivering on its stated aims to address the housing crisis, and to deliver the homes the people of Stockport need.

“This was among our first priorities when we took control of the Council in 2016. We immediately set about establishing Viaduct, which can make creative use of available land and funding to quickly deliver affordable housing.

“There is only so much councils can do without the backing of government. However, I am pleased to see Stockport is being recognised for this record of delivery.

“This goes to show the difference a Labour administration is making for Stockport, with a council leadership which understands and take action on the problems faced by Stopfordians.“

NOTES

Affordable housing is as defined by the government is social rented, affordable rented and intermediate housing. Affordable rented properties is defined at 80% or less of the average local market rental values. These represent around 50% of Stockport Viaduct’s completions to date.  Social rental properties are usually significantly cheaper. Viaduct have also delivered a number of social rented properties to date with plans to build more.
